About the variety. Known as «Rossa di Firenze», it stands out for its distinctive elongated bottle shape and its mild, sweet flavour when young, which deepens and becomes fuller as the bulbs mature. It can be harvested early as a red spring onion.

The crop prefers fertile, well-drained soils, with sandy-clay textures being the most suitable; in heavy-textured soils, ridges or rows should be raised to allow adequate drainage. Soil pH should be between 5.9 and 6.5.
Prefers mild climates without excessive heat, requiring good light and avoiding shaded spots.
A base fertilisation should be carried out by incorporating compost into the soil.
Onion is a crop highly sensitive to water deficits and excesses; the first irrigation should be carried out right after transplanting. Due to its shallow root system, watering must be frequent, with particular attention during bulb swelling. When the leaves begin to dry out, a sign of maturity, irrigation should be discontinued. A drip system can therefore be a good option, also preventing the leaves from staying wet and promoting disease development.
Mulching with organic materials is a good option, as it reduces competition between weeds and the crop and also helps retain soil moisture. The absence of adequate weed control leads to lower yields and provides a harbour for pests. Thermal weeding is also a valid alternative, but more costly.
Root-knot nematodes and thrips are pests of this crop. Root-knot nematodes can be controlled through crop rotation, biofumigation and soil solarisation. For thrips control, border plants favourable to anthocorid beneficial insects (such as marigolds) should be used, along with biological control using predatory mites and anthocorids.
Alternaria blight and downy mildew are diseases affecting this crop. Alternaria blight can be managed by using wide plant spacing and, if necessary, copper-based fungicides (such as Bordeaux mixture). Downy mildew can be controlled through wide plant spacing, appropriate crop rotations and, if necessary, copper-based fungicides.
In a refrigerated environment with a relative humidity of 65 to 70%, onions can be kept for several weeks; frequent inspections should be carried out and any bulbs showing signs of poor condition removed from storage.
