This crop does well in light, rich, well-drained soils; sandy loam and silt loam textures are well suited. The pH should be around 6.4.
It is a crop well adapted to Mediterranean conditions, with ideal germination temperatures of around 20°C and growing temperatures between 7°C and 27°C. It is susceptible to frost and low temperatures, preferring locations with good sun exposure.
Some compost is usually incorporated as a base fertilizer.
Drip irrigation is recommended for this crop, allowing precise water dosing and keeping foliage dry to prevent disease development.
Mulching is an interesting option to prevent competition between weeds and the crop.
Aphids, slugs and caterpillars are common crop pests. Aphid control involves moderate fertilisation without excess nitrogen, natural limitation with border hedgerows to encourage beneficial insects, biological control with parasitoid and predatory Hymenoptera and, if necessary, application of potassium soap or azadirachtin. Slugs can be controlled by encouraging beneficial insects (staphylinid beetles), protective barriers on the ground and, if necessary, by using iron orthophosphate. Caterpillars can be controlled using Bacillus thuringiensis.
Fusarium wilt and grey mould are two important diseases of this crop. To control Fusarium wilt, appropriate crop rotations, biofumigation and soil solarisation should be carried out. Regarding grey mould, diseased plant debris should be removed, excessive vigour and overhead watering avoided, and bentonite clay applied regularly.
