Can be done in the final location or in a tray with subsequent transplanting (more common) to the final location after 3 or 4 months. The crop can be grown in rows, keeping 10 cm between plants and 30 to 45 cm between rows.
The crop prefers fertile, well-drained soils; those with a sandy-clay texture are the most suitable. In heavy-textured soils, ridges or rows should be raised to allow adequate drainage. Soil pH should be between 5.9 and 6.5.
Prefers mild climates without excessive heat, requiring good light and avoiding shaded spots.
A base fertilisation should be carried out by incorporating compost into the soil.
Onion is a crop very sensitive to both water deficits and excess; the first watering should be done immediately after transplanting. Due to its shallow root system, irrigation must be frequent, with special attention during bulb swelling. When the leaves begin to dry out, a sign of maturity, watering should be discontinued. A drip irrigation system can therefore be a good option, also preventing the leaves from staying wet and reducing the risk of disease.
Mulching with organic materials is a good option, as it reduces competition between weeds and the crop and also helps retain moisture in the soil. The absence of adequate weed control leads to lower yields and harboring of pests. Thermal weeding is also a valid alternative, but more costly.
Root-knot nematodes and thrips are pests of this crop. Root-knot nematodes can be controlled through crop rotations, biofumigation, and soil solarization. For thrips control, border plants favourable to anthocorid beneficials (such as marigolds) should be used, along with biological control using predatory mites and anthocorids.
Alternaria blight and downy mildew are diseases affecting this crop. To control Alternaria blight, wide plant spacing can be used along with, if necessary, copper-based fungicides (such as Bordeaux mixture). Downy mildew can be controlled through wide plant spacing, suitable crop rotations and, if necessary, copper-based fungicides.
