Alface Salad Bowl

Salad Bowl Lettuce

A classic oak leaf lettuce with lush obovate leaves, deep and glossy green, growing in an open rosette without forming a head.

About the variety. Salad Bowl is a high-yielding standard variety: its loose, voluminous leaves cover the ground well and keep the plant productive for long periods. It reaches around 20 cm in height.

Itinerário técnico

Como cultivar salad bowl lettuce?

Um guia de cultivo passo a passo, da sementeira à colheita.

pH ideal 5.5 and 7Temperatura ideal 20 and 30°C

Sementeira

Sow in a seedling tray; transplant seedlings to their final location 3 to 4 weeks later. Grow in rows, spacing plants 15 to 20 cm apart and leaving 45 to 60 cm between rows.

Solo

It is a crop that adapts well to different soil types, though good drainage capacity is essential. Soil pH should be between 5.5 and 7.

Clima

The crop prefers temperatures between 20 and 30°C; however, temperatures should not be extreme, as this will lead to premature bolting.

Fertilização

Compost should be incorporated into the base fertilization to meet the crop's nutritional needs. It is important that the soil has phosphorus at the beginning of its development; if it is not present at a sufficient level in the soil, even after incorporating compost, a mineral fertilizer rich in that nutrient should be added.

Rega

Watering should be frequent since the root system is not very deep. Drip irrigation is particularly suitable for lettuce cultivation, as it prevents excessive moisture on the leaves and thus the onset of diseases.

Controlo de Infestantes

Mulching is an interesting option for lettuce cultivation, reducing competition between weeds and the crop.

Controlo de Pragas

Mites, aphids, leaf-mining larvae and root-knot nematodes are pests of this crop. Mite control can be achieved through biological control with predatory mites, with the option of applying azadirachtin or sulphur powder (if T < 28°C) if necessary. Aphids can be managed through moderate fertilisation avoiding excess nitrogen, natural limitation using boundary hedgerows to support beneficial insects, biological control with parasitoid and predatory Hymenoptera, and the application of potassium soap or azadirachtin if needed. Leaf-mining larvae can be controlled through natural limitation with hedgerows and other vegetation featuring nectar-producing plants to feed parasitoid adults, biological control with parasitoid Hymenoptera, and as a complementary measure, the application of azadirachtin. Root-knot nematodes are managed through crop rotation, biofumigation and soil solarisation.

Doenças

Alternaria blight, Sclerotinia, downy mildew and grey mould are diseases that affect this crop. To control Alternaria blight, wide plant spacings and copper-based fungicides (such as Bordeaux mixture) should be used. To control Sclerotinia, appropriate crop rotations and wider spacings should be carried out, and infected plants should be removed from the field as early as possible. Downy mildew can be controlled through crop rotations of at least 3 years, avoiding excess soil moisture and air humidity, using wide spacings and, if necessary, applying copper hydroxide at reduced concentrations (which should be lower the colder the weather, as it may risk scorching the leaves). Finally, grey mould should be controlled by removing diseased plant debris, avoiding excessive plant vigour, keeping water off the plants and by regularly applying bentonite clay.

Colheita

Temperatures of 0°C and relative humidity above 95% are required to maximize lettuce preservation.
